An investigation was underway Monday after an inmate from Los Angeles County was found dead in his cell at a Corcoran prison treatment facility.

Louis T. Jackson, 62, was found unresponsive in his cell at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

His cellmate, Derek E. Dunlap, 34, was placed in restricted housing pending an investigation by the prison and the Kings County District Attorney’s Office.

Jackson was sentenced to four years for second-degree burglary by a second striker in 1996 and later that year received a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole for possession of a deadly weapon in prison by a third striker.

Dunlap was sentenced in Solano County in 2023 to life in prison with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder.
