The gas leak near Whittier Avenue, southeast of 19th Street, was reported at 12:25 p.m., according to Costa Mesa Deputy Fire Chief Fred Seguin. Two homes in the Parkhill Drive and Parkcrest Drive area were evacuated as a precaution, Seguin said.

A Southern California Gas Co. crew was working to fix the leak, Seguin said.

A contractor accidentally ruptured a gas line, Denise King of the Gas Co. said.

Anyone planning to dig was urged to call 811 to notify utility companies at least two days ahead of schedule to give crews time to mark underground lines, King said.
