A motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle crash Sunday on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway and a motorist suffered moderate to severe injuries when he was struck by a drunken driver, while going to the aid of the motorcyclist.
The chain of events began at 12:53 a.m. when a motorist saw the speeding motorcyclist crash into the rear of his vehicle on the southbound freeway, just north of Warner Avenue, said Santa Ana police Cmdr. Jason Miramontes.
The motorcyclist went off the freeway and landed on Ritchey Street. A motorist on the surface street then went to the aid of the injured motorcyclist, Miramontes said.
As the motorist was crossing the street to make contact with arriving police, he was struck by a suspected drunken motorist — who also hit the injured motorcyclist, the police commander said.
The injured motorist, who suffered from moderate to severe injuries, is expected to survive his injuries at an area hospital. Paramedics rushed the motorcyclist to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9 a.m., he said.
The motorist who struck the motorcyclist and the good Samaritan was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Miramontes said.
The police commander said the drunken motorist hit the motorcyclist in his lower extremities and added the motorcyclist suffered fatal injuries when he drove off the freeway.
