Nine pot shops have closed since Anaheim city officials started cutting off the electricity to what they believe are rogue medical marijuana stores, the Orange County Register reported Monday.

“Any business that doesn’t have water and power isn’t very effective,” city spokeswoman Ruth Ruiz told the newspaper.

She said nine outlets closed over the past month, that eight more were likely to be closed by the end of the week and 11 others were to be ordered closed soon. Dispensaries which remain open may face criminal charges and a $1,000 fine for each day of operation.

More than a year ago, the city banned pot shops, based on a state Supreme Court ruling that said it could despite the 1994 medical marijuana law.
