Santa Ana police on Thursday sought two suspects in the shooting of a 20-year-old man.
One of the suspects in the roughly 1;40 p.m. shooting in the 1600 block of West Orchard Avenue ran onto Jose A. Sepulveda Elementary School at 1801 S. Poplar St., prompting authorities to temporarily hold students in classrooms, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The victim was shot several times in the upper body and taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery, he said, adding that investigators believe the attack was gang-related.
After the shooting, the wounded man ran east, then north in the 1400 block of South Doreen Way, where he ducked into a home and asked for help, Bertagna said.
Two suspects on bikes went in different directions, Bertagna said. One of the suspects threw away a gun that investigators later recovered, he said.
The suspects discarded clothing, which police also recovered, Bertagna said.
One man led police onto the elementary school campus.
Police searched homes in the area but made no immediate arrests, Bertagna said.
At Sepulveda Elementary, students were released one class at a time and escorted by authorities to their parents when the lockdown was lifted, Bertagna said.
