An SUV crashed into a gas meter behind a laundromat in Stanton on Sunday, causing a leak that prompted the evacuation of about 125 people from a strip mall and two nearby apartment buildings, authorities said.
The crash and leak was reported about 5:50 p.m. in the 12600 block of Beach Boulevard, near Lampson Avenue, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.
The black SUV involved in the crash left the scene, according to the sheriff’s department.
Leaking gas could be heard hissing after the crash, Concialdi said.
A Gas Company crew arrived about 6:25 p.m. and got to work shutting off the flow of gas so that repairs could be made, but those evacuated would have to stay away until the roughly two-hour job was complete, he said, adding that excavation of the street appeared to be necessary.
The leak was stopped at 8:15 p.m. and the hazard was eliminated, according to the OCFA.
