A 20-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of fatally stabbing a janitor inside a Garden Grove cafe.

Robert Gabriel Rodgers, whose last known address was in Anaheim, was booked on suspicion of murder, according to Garden Grove police Lt. Ben Stauffer.

The name of the victim, who regularly worked at the business as a janitor, was not immediately released.

An employee who showed up for work about 11 a.m. at the Volcano Tea House, 10130 Garden Grove Blvd., “saw a male suspect she didn’t recognize standing inside the front door … and he was kind of waving her in, like come on in, and telling her to be quiet,” Stauffer said.

“And she thought very smartly, very quickly on her feet. She locked the front door, which locked the subject inside the business, and then she went away and called 911 and got us here as quickly as possible,” he said.

The victim was found in the rear of the business near a cooler, he said.

“We have no idea what the motive or what even transpired here leading up to the stabbing, and so they’re going to work very diligently on the information they have at the scene here,” Stauffer said. “There are security cameras inside the business. It’s unclear at this time if that’s a recorded system or not, but we’ll certainly be checking into that.”
