A driver was killed Wednesday when his vehicle struck a tree in Costa Mesa, police said.
The 2000 BMW 540 struck the tree on the driver’s side, and the driver, a male, died at the scene, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Patrick Wessel.
The driver may have been a juvenile, Wessel said, adding that his juvenile passenger suffered minor injuries, including burns.
The accident occurred outside Estancia High School in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue around 1:10 a.m., Wessel said.
Witnesses told police the vehicle had been speeding northbound and had pulled into oncoming lanes to pass two other vehicles, Wessel said.
The driver appeared to lose control of the vehicle at a bend in the road, over-corrected and somehow slid backward into the tree, Wessel said.
