A driver who was killed when his vehicle struck a tree in Costa Mesa was identified Thursday by the Orange County Coroner Division as 16-year-old Jacob Pacheco of Costa Mesa.
Pacheco was killed when the 2000 BMW 540 he was driving struck the tree on the driver’s side, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Patrick Wessel.
Pacheco’s male passenger, also a juvenile, suffered minor injuries, including burns.
The accident occurred outside Estancia High School in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, Wessel said.
Witnesses told police the vehicle had been speeding northbound and had pulled into oncoming lanes to pass two other vehicles, Wessel said.
Pacheco appeared to lose control of the vehicle at a bend in the road, over-corrected and somehow slid backward into the tree, Wessel said.
