An investigation continued Wednesday into the fatal shooting of a “combative” suspect in an exchange of gunfire with a police officer in Costa Mesa.
The suspect, a 48-year-old man, was fatally shot about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 3000 block of Jeffrey Drive, according to Costa Mesa police Lt. Bryan Glass.
He said police were trying to arrest the man on a warrant, the details of which were not released.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, grew “violently combative” and “brandished a handgun,” according to Glass. During the ensuing struggle, shots were fired by the suspect and an officer, Glass said.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while two officers were treated for minor injuries, Glass said.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting, as is standard in shootings involving officers.
