An investigation was underway Sunday into the death of 49-year-old man found hanging and unconscious in the La Habra Police Department jail after his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence.

The Orange County coroner’s office identified the man as La Habra resident Daniel Oppenheimer.

Police were called about 9:45 a.m. Friday by a female reporting a domestic dispute, according to La Habra police.

Officers responded, arrested Oppenheimer and took him to the station, authorities said.

“While alone in a jail cell, the male was found hanging and unconscious. Officers began life-saving measures while paramedics arrived. The male was then transported to St. Jude Hospital (in Fullerton) where he was pronounced dead,” according to a police statement.

As is standard in all in-custody death cases, the Orange County District Attorney‘s Office was investigating the fatality.
