A construction crew damaged a gas line in Mission Viejo, forcing multiple street closures for several hours Wednesday afternoon.

The workers inadvertently ruptured the gas main at Los Alisos and Muirlands boulevards about 1:40 p.m., prompting closures of both streets in the area, according to Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock.

The damaged main was fixed by 4 p.m. and the streets were reopened by 4:45 p.m., said Joe D’Anna, a spokesman for the Southern California Gas Co.

The mishap serves as a reminder that workers should call 811 prior to any construction or excavation project to avoid damaging gas lines, D’Anna said.
