A man was in custody Wednesday on suspicion of gun possession after an encounter with an undercover sheriff’s deputy in Santa Ana, authorities said.
The man, whose name was withheld, brandished a BB gun as his vehicle was stopped alongside the deputy’s behind a stretch of railway tracks in the 1000 block of East Santa Ana Boulevard, said Santa Ana police Cmdr. Enrique Esparza.
Esparza said the suspect, who is in his 40s, produced the weapon after asking the deputy where he was from, a question commonly asked by gang members.
The weapon was displayed “not so much in a threatening manner, but enough to get the deputy riled up,” Esparza said.
The deputy called for backup, and the suspect was arrested several blocks away about 11:55 p.m. Tuesday for brandishing a weapon, Esparza said.
