Traffic was expected to be packed along Coast Highway in Newport Beach Saturday as a gas company crew repaired a pierced a one- inch gas line that was ruptured by construction workers.

The construction crew was working in the center median when they accidentally ruptured the line. The Gas Company of Southern California sent a crew to close the gas line, said Newport Beach Police Lt. Randy Querry.

Police were dispatched to the scene at 10:44 a.m., Querry said.

About 12:55 p.m. the Newport Beach issued an advisory asking motorists to avoid the area through about 3 p.m., along West Coast Highway between Newport Boulevard and Riverside Avenue.
