A special election is being held Tuesday in Orange County’s First Supervisorial District to choose a successor to Janet Nguyen, who was elected to the state Senate.

The candidates are former supervisor and state Sen. Lou Correa, Nguyen’s chief of staff Andrew Do, Garden Grove Councilman Chris Phan, Vietnamese station VNA-TV news anchor Chuyen Van Nguyen, and Lupe Morfin-Moreno, an office specialist with the Orange County Health Care Agency.

Only about two percent of voters, or about 4,300 people, had cast ballots so far today, Orange County Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley said. The estimate was based on a random sample of five polling places, he added.

The county has received 33,965 vote-by-mail ballots out of 128,000 sent out, Kelley said.

The First District includes Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Westminster, the unincorporated Midway City area and portions of Fountain Valley.

Polls will be open until 8 p.m.
