A rabid bat was found in a shopping center parking lot in Huntington Beach this week, prompting a warning from Orange County Health Care Agency officials Wednesday.
The bat, which was still alive, was on the ground outside a Big Lots store at 6911 Warner Ave., on Sunday.
Anyone who made contact with a bat in the area was asked to call the Orange County Health Care Agency’s epidemiology department at (714) 834-8180 or (714) 834-7792 after business hours.
The disease is nearly always fatal once symptoms surface, officials say.
That makes preventative care that much more crucial when exposed to rabies, officials say.
