Two men were booked on suspicion of murder in connection with a shooting that killed one man and injured several others at a Santa Ana restaurant, police reported Wednesday.
Viyey Castaneda, 29, of Santa Ana, and Anastacio Castaneda Rios, 45, of Santa Ana, are accused in the early Monday shooting at El Zocalo Mexican Grill and Seafood, 301 N. Tustin Ave., that killed 32-year-old Jose De Jesus Mendoza Maria of Los Angeles.
Police were called about 12:45 a.m. to the eatery, where a brawl in the men’s room led to the gunfire, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. It was unclear what sparked the conflict, he said.
At some point during the fight, someone fired multiple rounds from a handgun, Bertagna said. Rios was wounded by one of the bullets and another man suffered a graze wound, Bertagna said.
Rios was treated for the bullet wound and released from an area hospital, he said.
Castaneda tried to run away and was disarmed by a security guard wielding a fire extinguisher, Bertagna said. Patrons helped the guard apprehend Castaneda, who suffered head wounds and remains hospitalized, but is expected to recover, Bertagna said.
