Metrolink services between Riverside and Orange counties will be delayed Wednesday because of a freight train derailment in Yorba Linda.

The derailment occurred around 6.20 p.m. Tuesday near the 19600 block of Esperanza Road.

An Anaheim Police Department lieutenant said witnesses told officers at the scene that the Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train appeared to strike an object on the line, causing sparks.

A BNSF supervisor suggested a section of track may have given way beneath the freight train, a news videographer reported from the scene.

Four fully laden rail cars came off the tracks but remained upright, the videographer reported.

A Metrolink statement said service on the Inland Empire-Orange County Line and the 91 Line between Riverside and Orange County would be disrupted throughout this morning.
