Orange County Fire Authority firefighters executed their first rescue with a helicopter specially equipped to handle incidents at night, a fire captain said Thursday.
A hiker in his 20s who was stranded and too “exhausted” to hike down in the Cleveland National Forest at the main divide near Santiago Peak called for help about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, OCFA Capt. Shane Sherwood said.
A rescuer lowered from one of the helicopters with the night-vision equipment snagged the hiker and delivered him to safety within an hour, Sherwood said.
