A brush fire scorched close to 10 acres Friday afternoon along the Riverside (91) Freeway in Corona before crews got it under control.
The California Highway Patrol reported the blaze about 12:45 p.m. at the eastbound Riverside Freeway and Green River Road. By 6 p.m., crews were beginning to mop up, according to reports from the scene.
“Forward progress has stopped, so they’re in a good place,” Jennifer Fuhrman of the Riverside County Fire Department told City News Service.
The firefighting effort had been hampered by steep, inhospitable terrain, Fuhrman said.
At the peak of the blaze, nearly 100 firefighters from Corona, Riverside and Orange counties, as well as the U.S. Forest Service, were working to encircle the fire, with the help of water-dropping helicopters and air tankers.
The CHP closed two eastbound lanes to facilitate the work of fire crews. A SigAlert was issued at 1:06 p.m., and traffic coming from Orange County was slow.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
