A 7-month-old boy was killed and his parents and two siblings were injured Monday in a rollover crash in Placentia.
The crash involving a late-1990s Chevrolet Suburban carrying a family of five occurred about 10:10 a.m. in the 700 block of West Orangethorpe Avenue, according to Placentia police Lt. Eric Point.
The driver of the red SUV apparently struck a curb and then slammed into a power pole before rolling onto its roof, Point said.
Police and firefighters managed to get everyone but the infant out of the vehicle, Point said. The boy was “crushed inside his car seat” and pronounced dead at the scene, Point said.
The parents and their two children, a 3-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl, were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in moderate condition, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.
One report from the scene indicated the children’s mother was behind the wheel of the SUV when it crashed.
Orangethorpe was closed between Placentia Avenue and the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway in both directions as Edison officials worked to clear the area of the broken power pole and downed lines and police investigate the cause of the crash.
