A 40-year-old bicyclist was run over and killed before dawn Tuesday in Stanton by what was described by witnesses as a dark-colored SUV whose driver fled the scene, authorities said.

Jorge Covarrubias of Stanton was pronounced dead at 4:39 a.m. at the scene of the collision on southbound Beach Boulevard, south of Cerritos Avenue, according to Orange County sheriff‘s Lt. Jeff Hallock.

Covarrubias apparently fell off his bicycle in the far right lane while riding through an alley next to Beach Boulevard, Hallock said. The victim was then run over by a vehicle, which witnesses said was a dark-colored SUV, he added.

The suspect behind the wheel, who slowed for a short time following the collision, then punched the gas and was last seen southbound on Beach headed toward Katella Avenue, Hallock said.

A description of the driver was not available.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the sheriff’s department at (714) 647-7000 or (949) 425-1860; or Orange County Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.
