A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy is scheduled to be arraigned in Fullerton Tuesday on charges of threatening and assaulting his live-in girlfriend, including lighting her hair on fire — charges that could produce a prison term of more than two decades.
Alejandro Flores, 33, of Buena Park, is accused of hitting the woman in the face on Oct. 22, resulting in a broken nose. He is also accused of pushing the woman into a wall during an argument on June 28 about the pacifier used by a child relative under 2 years old who also lived with Flores and the woman.
Flores then hit the woman her on the top of her head with his fist and grabbed her neck, causing her to fall to the ground, according to prosecutors.
He is also accused of dragging her into the kitchen after she attempted to get away from him and forcibly holding her over the stove and turning on the gas burner, causing her hair to catch fire. He threatened more violence if she tried to call police, prosecutors said.
When she tried to scream, he turned up the television, they said. He also was accused of walking into a bedroom to retrieve his off-duty weapon and threatening her if she tried to leave the home, prosecutors said.
The next day when he went to work, she reported the crime to two relatives, who contacted Buena Park police, authorities said.
Flores has been charged with three felony counts of domestic battery with corporal injury, two felony counts of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, one felony count each of aggravated assault, criminal threats, dissuading a witness by force or threat and false imprisonment by menace or violence, with a sentencing enhancement allegation for great bodily injury inflicted during domestic violence and the personal use of a firearm.
If convicted, Flores could face a maximum sentence of 25 years and eight months in state prison.
