Caltrans on Friday night begins a three-week demolition of the old Carmenita Road Bridge above the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway in Santa Fe Springs.
The project will require the full closure of the Interstate 5 overnight seven days a week between Rosecrans and Valley View avenues, said Patrick Chandler of Caltrans.
The freeway closure times are:
- 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday nights through Sunday mornings.
- Midnight to 5 a.m. Monday nights through Friday mornings.
Caltrans also will close the following freeway connector roads daily between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
- The westbound Riverside (91) Freeway connector to the northbound 5 Freeway in Buena Park.
- And the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway connector to the southbound 5 Freeway in Santa Fe Springs.
Caltrans switched traffic from the existing two-lane Carmenita Road Bridge to the new 10-lane Carmenita Road Bridge last Friday.
However, until new ramps are built and connected to the new bridge, only two lanes in each direction will be accessible, Chandler said.
The closures are subject to change. Detour signs will be posted.
In 2011 and 2012, a closure of portions of Interstate 405 in Los Angeles led to massive traffic jams dubbed Carmageddon.
