A 14-year-old girl was struck and killed by a Santa Ana Unified School District box truck while riding her bicycle Monday morning near an intermediate school, authorities reported.
The girl, whose name was not immediately released, died at the scene of the 7:45 a.m. collision at Edinger Avenue and Center Street, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.
Santa Ana Police officers, who were first on the scene, started CPR immediately, and arriving paramedics also tried to revive the victim, but she sustained fatal head and chest injuries, Concialdi said.
The driver, who remained at the scene, was uninjured. He was said to be deeply distraught and cooperating with investigators, police said.
The collision happened across the street from Carr Intermediate School at 2100 W. Edinger Ave. The school district was sending counselors to Carr and to nearby Diamond Elementary at 1450 S. Center St.
