A 43-year-old man under investigation for cases of sexual battery, burglary, indecent exposure and other offenses was arrested Thursday morning in Costa Mesa after residents reported a naked man on their porch.
Jeffrey Smith was arrested about 6 a.m. in the 2100 block of Orange Avenue, Costa Mesa police Lt. Greg Scott said.
“Detectives had been investigating Smith since May of 2015 for several cases involving sexual battery, burglary, indecent exposure, peeping, prowling and trespassing,” Scott said. “Those earlier cases all occurred during early morning hours on the east side of Costa Mesa.”
Smith had been arrested in late April for failing to register as a sex offender in Costa Mesa and sentenced to 60 days in jail, Scott said. No details were released about the offense that led to him being required to register as a sex offender.
Smith was arrested in Costa Mesa in May on suspicion of battery and trespassing, Scott said.
Smith was arrested earlier this month for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender in Costa Mesa, but after court staff reviewed his case, he was released from custody, according to Scott.
Smith was arrested this morning on suspicion of disorderly conduct and indecent exposure and was also booked on suspicion of burglary and sexual assault in connection with prior incidents, Scott said.
Smith was booked at the Costa Mesa Police Department jail pending transport to the Orange County jail in Santa Ana, where his bail would be set at $50,000, Scott said.
Any victims or additional witnesses with information about Smith were urged to contact Costa Mesa police Detective Rob Hanson at (714) 754-5162.
