An unconscious 3-year-old boy was pulled from a swimming pool and revived in Garden Grove, authorities said Saturday.

A man who had been watching the child turned away for several moments to look at his phone, Garden Grove Fire Capt. Thanh Nguyen said. The boy then got into difficulties and had to be pulled from the water.

CPR was successfully performed, and the boy was hospitalized for evaluation, Nguyen said.

The incident occurred at 7:15 p.m. Friday in the 10400 block of Garden Grove Boulevard.

“Many of the near-drowning and drowning incidents that we respond to are avoidable if preventive measures are in place, and exercised,” fire Chief Tom Schultz said.

“The Garden Grove Fire Department offers free water watcher tags that designate a responsible person to watch the water and the area around it when people are around. These tags can be picked up at all Garden Grove fire stations.”
