A man on a bicycle was struck by a freight train and killed Friday afternoon in Santa Fe Springs, the second rail death in the city in a week.

The victim was struck by a BNSF train about 2:45 p.m. in the area of Rosecrans and Marquardt avenues, Whittier police told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

He apparently rode around a crossing arm when he was struck, according to Whittier police.

A 29-year-old man was fatally struck by an Amtrak train last Friday in Santa Fe Springs.

Peter James Guerra — identified by the coroner’s office — was struck by a westbound Amtrak train at 7 p.m. on Oct. 2 near the 11200 block of Rivera Road, according to the Whittier Police Department.

His death because a was ruled accidental because a freight train passing in the opposite direction at the same time on parallel tracks apparently prevented Guerra from hearing the horn of the train that hit him, authorities said.
