A suspected DUI driver sheared a fire hydrant, sending water hundreds of feet into the air in Anaheim at the end of a police pursuit early Saturday.

The vehicle knocked down a fence and crashed into a tree in the front yard of a residence on the 100 block of West Sycamore Street after hitting the hydrant, Anaheim Police Department Sgt. Daron Wyatt said.

It occurred at 1:20 a.m., after an Anaheim police sergeant attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation, Wyatt said.

The pursuit on surface streets briefly touched 70 miles per hour before the vehicle struck the hydrant, sending water 100-200 feet into the air, Wyatt said.

The suspect was hospitalized for minor injuries and would be booked for DUI and failure to yield, Wyatt said.
