An armed man shot and killed by officers in Anaheim had fired at two people who were not hit then and pointed a handgun at people as he drove to his estranged wife’s home, where he shot his brother-in-law in the leg and opened fire on a police helicopter, authorities said Sunday.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Anaheim resident Danny Rendon, was shot by three officers about 4:45 p.m. in the 2000 block of West Cris Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Anaheim Police Department Sgt. Daron Wyatt.

The officers had been called to the scene to investigate a shooting report. The crew of a department helicopter arrived first and reported seeing the suspect standing over and pointing a handgun at a male victim who was lying in the street bleeding, Wyatt said.

“While the helicopter was orbiting and directing ground units to the scene, it is believed the suspect fired the handgun at the police helicopter and its crew,” the sergeant said, adding that the aircraft was not struck.

When officers arrived on the ground, they confronted Rendon, who was still holding the firearm. He dropped the gun, but did not comply with commands, “at which time three officers discharged their firearms, striking and killing the suspect,” Wyatt said.

The wounded victim, Rendon’s brother-in-law, was in stable condition when taken to a hospital.

A firearm was recovered from near Rendon’s body, Wyatt said.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that immediately prior to shooting the victim on West Cris Avenue, the suspect discharged a firearm at two people near the intersection of South Roberts Street and West Juno Avenue, but neither of those victims were struck,” Wyatt said.

Neither victim knew the suspect and it’s unclear why he fired at them, Wyatt said.

“The suspect then drove to his estranged wife’s residence on West Cris Avenue, where he shot the victim who is his brother in law. While on the way from Juno and Roberts to Cris Avenue, the suspect brandished a firearm at several people from the driver’s window. Several witnesses called 911 to report the shootings.”

Officers’ body-worn cameras were activated during the shooting, Wyatt said.

A SWAT team searched the area of Roberts Street and Juno Avenue before it was deemed secure, police said.
