A fire in the garage of a Placentia home left two men critically burned today and a police officer suffered minor smoke inhalation.

Firefighters sent to the 100 block of Primrose Avenue at 12:20 p.m. extinguished the flames in about 25 minutes, said Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority.

Two men in their 30s were taken to the UCI Burn Center for treatment of burns over 80-90 percent of their bodies, Kurtz said. A Placentia police officer was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation, Kurtz said.

There was no update on the men’s condition late this afternoon.

Kurtz said firefighters were “carefully” examining materials that burned in the garage, adding that it’s still unclear exactly what the material was.

He said a 10-pound dachshund dog was rescued from one of two nearby homes that were damaged in the fire.

Twenty-eight firefighters from the OCFA and the Anaheim and Fullerton fire departments battled the flames, according to Kurtz said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

A damage estimate was not immediately released.
