At least four people were hurt when a wrong-way driver who possibly had been drinking crossed over the median strip and struck several cars on a road in Huntington Beach, police said Friday.
The late-night St. Patrick’s Day crash occurred in the 17300 block of Beach Boulevard just before 11 p.m. Thursday, said Huntington Beach police Sgt. Tom Weizoerick.
“We don’t know yet if the wrong-way driver was drinking because he is at the hospital being treated for injuries,” Weizoerick said. “But he was exhibiting some of the characteristics of someone who was drinking. We just don’t know whether he was yet.”
The four people hurt suffered moderate to minor injuries and were all transported to a hospital for treatment, he said.
One of the cars that was struck by the wrong-way driver was an Uber vehicle with one passenger inside, Weizoerick said.
Jose Martinez was driving one of the cars that was hit, but he was not injured. He told City News Service he was driving on Beach Boulevard when the car two cars in front of him suddenly swerved to get out of the way of the wrong-way driver.
“The guy who crossed over the median strip then hit the car that was directly in front of me and I ended up rear-ending that car because it suddenly stopped,” Martinez said.
No other people were inside the car driven by Martinez, he said.
The crash remained was under investigation by Huntington Beach Police.
