Authorities Tuesday were trying to figure out how a person who ended up under a motorhome on an Orange County freeway was killed.
It was not immediately clear if the motorhome crashed, but it was the only vehicle involved in the incident, according to a CHP dispatcher.
Firefighters responded just before 5 p.m. Monday to the scene on the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Costa Mesa just south of Fairview Road, according to the California Highway Patrol and Costa Mesa Fire Department.
The initial announcement from the scene was that the person apparently had been trapped under the motorhome, but or or she had been freed by about 5:15 p.m.
However, a CHP log then indicated that coroner’s office personnel were summoned to the scene. The person died of injuries sustained in the incident.
Two northbound freeway lanes were closed as well as one lane of a southbound transition road to state Route 73 and a SigAlert was issued, the CHP reported. Traffic returned to normal later in the evening.
