Authorities Saturday were trying to determine what motivated a 25-to-30 year old man to take his own life by jumping off a freeway overpass in Westminster.

The man was struck by a vehicle and killed on the San Diego (405) Freeway, leading to a rush-hour traffic mess as the roadway was closed.

The man is believed to have jumped about 6:05 p.m. Friday from an overpass onto the northbound side of the freeway, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the dispatcher said, adding that no one else was injured in the incident.

Westminster Police Department Sgt. Alan Iwashita said a coroner’s investigation was pending.

All lanes of the freeway were re-opened after authorities cleared the scene, the dispatcher said.
