A small brush fire under a bridge at the Santa Ana (5) and Garden Grove (22) freeways Tuesday caused significant traffic jams.

The fire broke out just after noon and was quickly knocked down before it got beyond 500 feet, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz.

California Highway Patrol officials had to block off traffic in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 at the 22 and the Orange (57) Freeway, but were able to reopen the transition to the 57 as of  12:45 p.m., according to CHP Officer Jon Latosquin.

The fire did not force any closures in the southbound lanes, but one lane had to be shut down due to a traffic collision as firefighters battled the blaze in the northbound lanes, Latosquin said.
