One person was killed Monday morning when a Mercedes went off of the Riverside (91) Freeway, crashed next to a transition road and burst into flames, authorities said.
The Orange County coroner’s office reported the victim was a male, but did not release his age.
The deadly crash was reported at 2:23 a.m. on the transition from the southbound Orange (57) Freeway to the eastbound Riverside Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported.
It appeared the Mercedes E 350, with one person inside, came off of a Riverside Freeway overpass and landed on some brush next to the transition road before bursting into flames, said Captain Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority. Firefighters put out the flames, he said.
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert shutting down the transition from the southbound Orange Freeway to the eastbound Riverside Freeway for its investigation. There was no immediate word from authorities why the crash took place, whether alcohol may have been involved and if speed may have been a factor.
