Police Sunday were trying to determine why a driver apparently lost control of his vehicle at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre just before a Pacific Symphony performance, injuring nine people and hitting a fence, another vehicle and an unoccupied police vehicle.

Five of the injured were taken to hospitals.

The incident was reported at about 6:45 p.m. Saturday at the amphitheater at 8808 Irvine Center Drive, said Irvine police Commander Mike Hallinan.

No one was cited or arrested. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash, Hillinan said.

Four of the people hospitalized included four traumas and one with minor injuries, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Alan Wilkes.

The cause of the crash was under investigation by Irvine police, Hallinan said.

The Pacific Symphony was about to perform in concert at the amphitheater.

Police asked witnesses to call Detective Jon Cherney at (949) 724-7024.
