The California Highway Patrol Tuesday investigated a deadly shooting by an officer of a suspect who ran across lanes of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine, apparently in some kind of escape attempt.

According to a TV report, the suspect ran across the northbound freeway lanes before jumping to the southbound side and may have been struck by a vehicle before the shooting.

However, few details were yet available after the Monday night incident, according to officials. There was no word of why the suspect ran across the freeway, nor what prompted the shooting.

Commuters at the tail end of rush hour were stuck in a traffic jam as the southbound lanes were closed after the 7 p.m. incident.

No officers were injured in the shooting that occurred on the southbound side of the freeway north of Alton Parkway, according to Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority. The suspect, a man in his 30s, was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Officers gave CPR to the suspect at the scene before he was taken to the hospital where he later died, KCAL9 reported.
