A new auxiliary bishop has been appointed to the Diocese of Orange, the Vatican said.

Auxiliary Bishop-elect Timothy Freyer was appointed by Pope Francis to serve under Diocese of Orange Bishop Kevin Vann.

Freyer’s episcopal ordination in his new post will be held Jan. 17.

“I am both humbled and honored to accept this appointment,” Freyer said.

“Since I was appointed here, Bishop-elect Freyer has become a great friend and collaborator in ministry and a blessing for me and the entire diocese,” Vann said.

Freyer grew up in Huntington Beach. He earned a bachelor’s degree at St. John’s Seminary College in Camarillo, where he also studied theology as a graduate student.

Freyer was ordained June 10, 1989, and has served at multiple parishes in Orange County.
