A possible kidnapping suspect was hospitalized Thursday after he tried to escape from Santa Ana police in a car chase, only to crash his vehicle into a tree.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage in Irvine and had to be extricated by authorities.

The 15-minute chase came to an end about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of El Camino Real in Irvine.

The man was hospitalized for injuries that were not believed to be life- threatening, said Cmdr. Matt Brown of the Santa Ana Police Department.

Officers believed the car they were chasing was involved in a kidnapping earlier that day, but details about the kidnapping were not immediately available. The alleged kidnapping victim, a man, was found safe, Brown said, and the incident was being investigated.

Once released from the hospital, the driver is expected to face charges related to evading police and further investigation will determine if he will be charged in the alleged kidnapping, Brown said.
