A sighting Friday of a 12-foot great white shark near Sunset Beach has prompted officials to close access to the water there.

An officer in a police helicopter spotted the shark about 10:40 a.m. at the southern border of Sunset Beach near Bolsa Chica State Beach, according to Huntington Beach Marine Safety Lt. Claude Panis.

The closure, which affects all of Sunset Beach and part of the state beach, is in effect for 24 hours, Panis said.

The officer also spotted a juvenile shark about six- to seven-feet long Friday morning, Panis said.
