Two teenage boys were arrested in connection with a fire at a Newport Beach middle school, police announced Tuesday.
The arson investigation prompted by the Nov. 11 fire at Ensign Middle School, 2000 Cliff Drive, culminated with Monday’s arrest of 15- and 16-year- old boys on suspicion of recklessly starting a structure fire, vandalism and felony burglary, police said.
They were booked at the Newport Beach jail and then released to their parents. Their names were not released because of their ages.
The fire occurred about 4:30 a.m., began in the gym and spread into a wall and up to an attic space, according to police.
A total of 20 firefighters from Newport Beach, Orange and the Orange County Fire Authority knocked down the main fire in about 20 minutes and extinguished the entire fire in about an hour.
No injuries were reported.
