An item initially believed to be a possibly explosive device was spotted alongside El Toro Road in Mission Viejo Friday, prompting a closure of the road until sheriff’s investigators determined the item was harmless.
A passerby spotted the item just before noon near Glenn Ranch Road, according to Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Lane Lagaret.
Deputies shut down traffic in both directions on El Toro Road for about 100 yards east and west of Glenn Ranch during the investigation, Lagaret said.
Shortly before 1 p.m., investigators determined the item was not dangerous, and appeared to be the casing of some type of bell. Sheriff’s officials cleared the scene and roads were reopened a short time later.
