A 21-year-old man was killed and a 21-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries when a sedan hit a power pole in San Clemente, authorities said Sunday.

The man was later identified as Joseph McCarty of San Juan Capistrano, according to the coroner’s office.

The crash was at 12:47 a.m Saturday on Avenida Vaquero, south of Calle Vallarta, where McCarty was pronounced dead at the scene.

McCarty was in a 2002 Honda Accord that struck a utility pole, ejecting him and the 21-year-old woman, said Orange County sheriff‘s Lt. Steve Gil.

It was not immediately known who was driving at the car at the time of the crash, Gil said.

Paramedics rushed the 21-year-old woman to an area hospital, where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries, he said.
