It may be an interesting day for swimmers and surfers in San Clemente Tuesday after five reported sightings of sharks forced closure of the area’s ocean waters.

The first sighting of an 8- to 9-foot Great White shark was made by lifeguards at the pier about 10:30 a.m. Monday, said Marine Safety Lt. Rod Mellott. Four more shark sightings were reported, the most recent coming at 3:45 p.m., Mellott said.

A planned four-hour closure turned into a rolling one throughout the rest of Monday, he said.

The area has seen numerous shark sightings this year. There was no word about any sighting Tuesday.
