A 20-year-old man turned himself into authorities this morning for allegedly causing a rollover crash in Fullerton that killed one of his passengers.
Sergio Sevilla was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run, and domestic violence, said Fullerton police Sgt. Jon Radus.
The Fullerton resident had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend and assaulted her just prior to the reported 9:15 p.m. Sunday crash at Sapphire Road and Garnet Lane, Radus said.
Sevilla was driving a black 2013 Volkswagen Jetta eastbound on Garnet Lane when he tried to turn north onto Sapphire Road and lost control of the car, he said. The Volkswagen hit the curb, causing it to rollover several times and partially eject the front right passenger, he said.
Once the vehicle came to a rest, Sevilla and a second passenger fled on foot, he said.
Gabriel Ventura, 20, of Fullerton, who was the front right passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.
The residential area is relatively flat and a rollover crash was “unusual for that area,” said Fullerton police Sgt. Tony Bogart said.
About 1:15 a.m., Sevilla called the Orange County Sheriff’s Department from a Yorba Linda home wanting to turn himself in, Radus said. Fullerton police detectives responded to the scene and took him into custody without incident.
It was not immediately known if alcohol, drugs or excessive speed triggered the crash, Bogart said.
