A pedestrian may have committed suicide by jumping in front of a big rig and being killed on a Santa Ana freeway Thursday, authorities said.

The death was reported at 2:38 a.m. on the southbound Costa Mesa (55) Freeway at Edinger Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The pedestrian allegedly jumped in front of the big rig, according to reports from the scene.

The pedestrian, whose age and gender were not immediately reported, was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.

Three southbound lanes were closed for the investigation but reopened shortly after 3:30 a.m.
