A man was taken into custody at a Dana Point condominium after a 10-hour standoff with Orange County Sheriff’s deputies, authorities said Monday.
Deputies were called at 11:24 a.m. Sunday to the unit at the Tennis Villas at Monarch Beach in the 100 block of Centre Court after neighbors reported hearing gunshots, according to sheriff’s officials.
A woman left the unit after deputies arrived and told them the shots were an accident, said Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Lane Lagaret. The man, meanwhile, refused to come out.
Deputies obtained a search warrant for the residence and evacuated adjoining units, Lagaret said. The SWAT team arrived and fired tear gas into the unit about 7:30 p.m.
At about 9:30 p.m. the suspect was removed from the unit on a gurney, according to news photos from the scene. The sheriff’s department Tweeted: “SWAT made entry after deploying gas. Subject taken into custody. Community is safe.”
