The death was reported by the driver of the white Escalade that struck the pedestrian at 11:11 p.m. Friday near Kraemer Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The pedestrian, who was reported to have been walking in the carpool lane, died at the scene, the CHP said.

There was no immediate word of why the victim was walking on the freeway.

The driver and her passengers were not hurt.

The westbound carpool and first two lanes were expected to be closed until at least 12:30 a.m. for the investigation.
