A 19-year-old man who was wounded in an officer- involved shooting in Santa Ana after two gang unit detectives attempted to “make contact” with him and another male remain hospitalized Saturday in stable condition.

It wasn’t clear what prompted officers to open fire, but a Santa Ana police official said a weapon was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

The suspects fled when the detectives attempted to make contact with them shortly after 7 p.m. Friday, according to Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. It wasn’t immediately clear what the pair was wanted for.

The two ran east on 17th Street to English Street where they ran behind a dentist’s office with the officers in pursuit. The officer-involved shooting occurred in the parking lot of the dentist’s office, Bertagna said.

The 19-year-old man was shot and wounded in the upper body and taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery, Bertagna said. He was in stable condition, police said.

The other suspect, whose age was not available, was not hit by the gunfire and ran away. Officers set up a perimeter and found him a few blocks away hiding at a home, where he was taken into custody.

No officers were hurt in the shooting, Bertagna said.
